Old Pulteney 12 Year Old
Old Pulteney 12 Year Old is a brilliant beginners malt - more complex than a blended whisky, but also soft and very easy drinking. The same great subtly maritime dram, matured in ex-bourbon casks, but now freshly repackaged to match the new 15 and 18 year old expressions.
The Pulteney distillery is situated in the town of Wick, and is the most Northerly mainland distillery. Built in the early 1800s to serve the then huge herring fleet, over time it became a supplier to whisky blenders. Since 1997 the current owners have once again been promoting it as a single malt.
The great whisky writer Michael Jackson liked to call Pulteney the "Manzanilla of the North" because, as with Manzanilla sherry, some tasters find a salty note in the whisky.
The nose is soft and fruity - baked apples - with an occasional touch of fresh sea air about it. The palate is rounded and easy going, with more apple-y fruit and a light note of malt. All too easy to drink, and a great crowd pleaser.
