G&M Speymalt Macallan 1998
Speymalt is the name used by Gordon & Macphail for their bottlings of Macallan. The 1998 vintage was matured in sherry wood and is everything you want from a Macallan. Just delicious!
This small batch of casks was filled in 1998 and bottled in 2017, making the whisky eighteen (or possibly nineteen) years old. We love it.
Our tasting note:
nose: malty, with brown sugar and mellow old oak. There's the merest hint of an earthy empyreumatic character.
palate: rounded, with beery malt, brown sugar, an interesting grassy note, and a savoury aspect. The sherry wood character grows over time, evolving into something like a madeira wine gravy. The brown sugar is dark, but not quite treacle-y.
