The Camarena family's original distillery was destroyed during the Mexican revolution. Don Felipe Camarena founded La Altena in 1937. The business is now run by his grandchildren.

La Altena uses the traditional production methods, grinding the agave with a stone wheel called a tahona and foot-treading the pulp prior to fermentation and distillation.
